1. What is Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana?
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government-backed savings scheme launched in 2015 under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative. It's designed for parents of girl children, offering tax-free returns, government backing, and a long compounding horizon.
It's one of the highest-yielding small savings schemes in India, with returns comparable to PPF but with a higher rate. It's an ideal instrument for building a corpus for a daughter's education or marriage.
2. Key features
| Feature | Details |

3. Who can open an SSY account?
An SSY account can be opened by:
- A parent or legal guardian of a girl child below 10 years of age
- Maximum two accounts per family (for two daughters)
- Accounts can be opened at any post office or authorized bank
- Required documents: birth certificate of girl child, ID proof of parent, address proof
If a third girl child is born due to a multiple birth (twins/triplets), a third account can be opened with special approval.
4. Deposits and interest calculation
Deposits must be made for 15 years. The account matures 21 years after opening. During the last 6 years (years 16–21), you don't need to deposit, but the balance continues to earn interest.
💡 Deposit timing matters. Interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and last day of each month. Deposit early in the month to maximize interest.
A minimum of ₹250 is required per year. If you miss a year, you can pay a penalty of ₹50 to revive the account. Non-payment for multiple years may result in the account being discontinued (though interest continues to accrue).
5. Withdrawals
SSY allows partial withdrawal for education after the girl turns 18:
- Maximum: 50% of the balance at the end of the previous year
- Allowed for: Higher education admission or fees
- Documentation: Admission letter or fee receipt required
- Frequency: Can be withdrawn in one or more installments over 5 years
Full withdrawal is allowed only at maturity (21 years) or in special cases (marriage of the girl after age 18, up to 50% of corpus).
⚠️ Premature closure is only allowed in exceptional circumstances (death of the account holder or medical emergency). Even then, it requires specific approval and may forfeit interest.
6. Taxation
SSY enjoys EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) status:
- Investment: Deposits qualify for Section 80C deduction (up to ₹1.5L)
- Interest: Fully tax-free
- Maturity: Entire corpus is tax-free
This makes SSY one of the best tax-efficient instruments in India. The effective return after tax is higher than any taxable fixed income product.
7. SSY vs PPF vs other options
| Feature | SSY | PPF | FD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current rate | 8.2% | 7.1% | 6.5–7.5% |
| Tenure | 21 years | 15 years | 1–10 years |
| Max/year | ₹1.5L | ₹1.5L | No limit |
| Tax | EEE | EEE | Taxable |
| 80C | Yes | Yes | No |
SSY has a higher rate than PPF, but longer lock-in. For a daughter's future, SSY is ideal. For general retirement planning, PPF is more flexible.
8. Common mistakes
- Opening late: The earlier you open, the more compounding works. Open before age 10.
- Depositing at month-end: Interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and last day. Deposit early.
- Depositing more than ₹1.5L: Excess deposits don't earn interest.
- Forgetting to deposit: Missing years may require penalty to revive the account.
- Not using 80C: SSY deposits qualify for Section 80C — use this to reduce taxable income.
- Withdrawing early: Premature withdrawal is only allowed in specific circumstances.
9. Final thoughts
SSY is one of the best savings instruments available in India — high interest, government backing, and complete tax exemption. It's an excellent way to build a corpus for a daughter's education or marriage.
Open the account early, deposit consistently, and let compounding work over 21 years. If you can deposit the maximum ₹1.5L each year, your daughter could have a corpus of over ₹1 crore by maturity.
